St. Patrick's Day Fun

I'm not one that's real big into celebrating all the little holidays in a big way, but I do like to buy my kids cute shirts to at least recognize the day. I felt a little guilty on Valentine's day when I saw the gifts some of my friends gave their kids! I mean, it was almost like a full on Easter basket! Only it was Valentine's day.... I didn't even give my kids a box of chocolates or a card. They got shirts to wear to their Valentine's day party at Playgroup, and that was it!

Don't get me wrong. I don't have an issue with other people going big. I do the Elf on the Shelf in December, and I know that drives some people nuts. I think people should celebrate and have fun with their kids however they want!

I didn't realize that St. Patrick's day was a day for such big shenanigans! I knew some people liked to feed their kids green food, and that you're supposed to wear green or you get pinched, but that's it! I didn't know that a leprechaun was supposed to leave green footprints in your house and leave a trail of gold coins to help you find a pot of (chocolate) gold. The extent of my planning for St. Patrick's day was to get my kids green t-shirts! Ha!

The outtakes

We did have a little St. Patrick's day party at our Community Playgroup on Thursday. The kids all wore green, we had special snacks, and a craft for them to do.

Being crafty.

The extent of what I had planned for Friday, was to wash their shirts so they could wear them again! But then I saw someone post on Facebook the green pancake breakfast they'd made for their kids and I got inspired to do that too. I had some kiwis in the fridge, so I added that, ate off green plates, and used green forks!

Helping make the pancakes

We also had green milk!

I don't think I'll ever get into doing the whole leprechaun bit (watch me eat my words in a few years), but I can get behind feeding them green foods. That's easy enough, and different enough to stand out and be something special. They had fun, despite not really understanding what St. Patrick's day is all about!

  1. Oh, Amber! I LOVE the idea of the green footprints, the trail of gold coins and pot of coins at the end of the trail!!! I never realized people did that either. I had been reading a blog about leprechaun traps and thought of my!! But love the trail!!! Wish I would have known that as Bethany was here and that would have been fun!!! I wonder if my old brain can remember that and do it next year?? I think you did a wonderfully fun day for your kids and all you have to do is look at the pictures to know that you batted it out of the park in fun for them!!! Just keep doing what you are doing and what you are inspired to do year to year and you will continue to have happy, blossoming children!!! Love and hugs, Auntie

    1. Now you know for next time! I'm sure Bethany would have thought it was great, and I know you would have had fun with it too!

  2. I just got Bowen a shirt to wear to daycare and that's about it for St. Patty's day! haha Maybe next year I can do green pancakes or something. He was too young to know the difference this year.

    1. I call that a win if he had a green shirt! It took three years to do the green pancakes, and it literally wasn't something I had planned on doing until I saw someone else post theirs! lol

  3. AGREED! When did the traps, green footprints, etc. start? St Patrick's Day was not a big thing when I was growing up and I'm 25% Irish! Before kids it was a time to go out and day drink. This year Izzy wore a green shirt (that actually said "be holly" because it was from CHRISTMAS) and Wes didn't wear green because I didn't have anything green. DONE. LOL.

  4. Ha ha! I have to agree with Non Sequitur Chica. St. Patrick's Day was never a thing until high school when it was cool to wear green (bonus points if it was sexy). Honestly, I can already see myself following in my parents footsteps and NGAF about these holidays. Valentine's day is for your partner, so I'm not sure when we started giving gifts to our kids. I was actually relieved when Olivia's ECFE class didn't do a Christmas party. I mean, come on, they're one. I know I sound like a scrooge. I think because money is so tight and time is so precious, I just see these things as money pits. And it just brings up reminders that we struggle financially because of infertility. Anyway, off my soapbox. Sounds like a fun day!
