Microblog Monday: Eliminating Bottles

Whelp, today is day 1 of Operation Bottles No More.  I decided it's time to start the elimination process.  They've been drinking water out of their sippy cups like champs, and now it's time to start adding milk to the sippys.  We are dropping both midday nap bottles and their bedtime bottle*, but are keeping the first thing in the morning bottle for now.  They both want that first bottle immediately, and they always cry and whine until they get it.  I decided to tackle the others first, get them used to drinking milk from the sippy, and then I'll take on the battle of eliminating the first morning bottle at that point.

We've managed to make it through the first nap without a bottle this morning.  Ayden drank his sippy cup of milk without blinking an eye.  Rylee could have cared less.  She took a few drinks, but wasn't really interested.  I put it in the fridge for later.  Hopefully, she'll catch on and drink enough to still get her necessary milk consumption.  I just may have to work a little harder and keep after her to try drinking it more throughout the day.

Wish us luck for the rest of Operation Bottles No More!

*Just to clarify, they always got bottles before naps and bedtime, but never WENT to bed or fell asleep with their bottles.

  1. Wish you luck. Eilonwy decided she didn't like the sippy cup and so we went with a regular cup until her Doidy cup arrives in the mail. She loves drinking water from the regular cup. Fingers crossed she'll like to hold onto the Doidy cup and learn to drink from that so in a few months we'll be able to start with milk in it.

    1. My two make great big messes with a regular cup, so that's a ways off yet! lol I'm not familiar with the Doidy cup. Good luck to you on that! Hope it works!

  2. Go Ayden! Don't worry too much if Rylee doesn't drink too much milk in the next couple of days- just make sure she gets water and watery fruit instead and she will start drinking milk from a sippy soon. Good luck and stay strong!

    1. Thanks for that reassurance! It's so nice to have that reminder that a few days of less milk won't be that big a deal while she makes the adjustment. They generally do good drinking water and we've been having a lot of honeydew and canteloup lately, so she should be fine!

    1. Afternoon milk sippys were a success for both of them! Although Ayden is refusing his nap. Sigh. They seem to take turns.

    1. My two like to throw their sippy cups around and I'm afraid of the mess if they had actual cups at this point! Heaven forbid that their cup actually sit on their high chair tray if they aren't ACTUALLY taking a drink at that moment! Lol!

  6. We never ended up doing sippys. The big boys refused. We went to straws (the Target toss and Go kind because they were cheap lol) and then open cups, although we still usually use the straw cups to minimize spillage when they are drinking out of the kitchen. Jack went straight to straw cups, too, because that is what he took from his brothers. ;)

  7. We went to straw sippy cups and skipped the other kinds. Here's an article I like to share:

  9. Good luck! It was a long transition for us. We stuck to the whole "no bottle" thing, but it took a long time to find a sippy cup that made them happy so they would drink the same amount of milk as before.

  10. I want to do this, but my husband is resisting for some reason. We have the same - morning bottle, post nap bottle and bedtime bottle. The do great drinking water from the straw sippy cup so I think we'll have a few days/weeks of transition pains, but they will learn to drink milk from the sippy. I need to keep working on him. It will be sad for one more piece of their baby-ness to go away, but I am ready.

  11. If you have trouble getting in the milk. Stonyfields makes whole milk yogurt. They call it yobaby and yotot. That's what I had to do with Emma and still do. She loves them.
