Christmas Babies

Lady in grocery store: "you look like you're about to pop."
Me: "I still have quite a ways to go yet."
Lady: "maybe you'll have a Christmas baby."
Me: "I really hope not."
Lady launches into a story about the Christmas babies in her family and how much fun it is, reassuring me that it is the greatest thing ever, totally didn't hear me when I said there's two babies in there.  I ended up walking away to finish my shopping.

This same conversation, almost word for word, has happened 5 times in the last week.  FIVE TIMES!  All but one of these conversations were with total strangers.

Okay, it's not that I have anything against Christmas babies.  However, I would really like to NOT spend Christmas in the NICU because my babies are born so early.  I will be 33 weeks at Christmas.  Chances are that they would be healthy and be okay, but it's a little too early not to expect time in the NICU at that point.

I find it funny and a little annoying all at the same time.  I enjoy people being excited about our pregnancy and our babies.  I really don't mind at all when people touch my belly.  I think it's kind of fun actually.  However, that is limited to people I KNOW!  I really don't understand total strangers asking when your due date is, or giving advice, or TOUCHING you without asking.

It's different when you are actually engaging with that person who is a stranger, but I find it odd when you are just going about your business and they specifically go out of their way to stop you.

I told my husband early on that I never realized that people get a little weird around a pregnant woman.  It's as if normal rules of etiquette fly out the window.  I made that observation way back in the first trimester.  Little did I know then what I would be in for now!

For the most part, I do find it funny and get a kick out of it.  However, I suspect the whole Christmas baby conversation is going to get a little old, especially when it's already happened 5 times before Thanksgiving....

  3. You should just tell them you're not pregnant. Christmas in the NICU does not sound like fun. I actually never had a stranger touch my belly. All the attention is kinda fun but it definitely gets old.

  7. This is definitely a grin and bear it moment! Probably going to be happening a lot more carrying twins and with the holidays. Christmas miracle and blessing time! I guess that's why they say "it takes a village to raise a child". Everyone thinks those babies you are carrying belong to them too, even if they are a stranger!
Just read your fellow bloggers responses. Oh, do tell someone that you aren't pregnant!!! How funny would that be. Should have Tony videoing it though when you do that!!!! LOL, FUNNY!!!!!

  10. People really shouldn't assume woman are close to due EVER. I had someone do that to me when I was pregnant with my second. I still had quite a way to go and just left feeling huge and ugly. And for you, since it would be dangerous to have the babies that early, it's even worse! People don't know the details and it would be better if they'd keep their mouths shut!

  11. I still don't get people touching bellies. Especially strangers. Maybe it's good I can't get pregnant. I'd probably hit someone. Actually, no. I'd be tempted to reach out and touch their belly right back. Come to think of it, that's what you should do.

  12. I swear people don't know how to talk to pregnant people. I wanted to punch so many people in the face. Truly. I just smiled and nodded quite often. I do think we need more bump pictures though. I am sure you are just the cutest!

  13. I literally have never touched a pregnant belly, and most of my best friends have been pregnant. I mean, it's weird, right? Just like putting your hands on someone's stomach? Especially a stranger! I mean, I had a big lunch and it's definitely showing...anyone interested in feeling for movement?

  14. Ha! You get people telling you that you are ready to pop, I get people telling me that I am small for 38 weeks. Neither of us can win.

  15. 1) No Christmas babies!

    2) People are stupid when it comes to pregnant women.

    3) It doesn't stop once the babies are on the outside and it's worse with twins. People used to ask my sister if her twins were identical. They didn't seem to like her answer: "No. One has a penis and the other one has a vagina."
